Plastic Surgery - Millions of successes; a few not so much

This rather frightening report is provided by Fort Myers Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Robert J. Brueck MD in the interest of preventing recurrences as a result of bad choices.

When anyone undergoes plastic surgery, it is essential that a board certified plastic surgeon be selected.

Secondly, make sure the operating room is fully licensed and credentialed.

Recently a Davie, Fl. Woman – 38 years old – lost her life following liposuction to her waist, and fat injections to her buttocks. The fat was removed from around her waist – then injected into her buttocks to enlarge it.

At autopsy, large (1 cm.) pieces of fat were found in her lungs. As a plastic surgeon who has performed liposuction in the past, I wonder how pieces as large as 1 cm. could have been injected. I don’t understand unless the surgeon used large cannulas and injection needles. Also the facility where the surgery was performed was not licensed to have such procedures performed there.

So check out your doctor by, all means, and at the same time check out WHERE the surgery will be performed.

IS THE ECONOMY BOOMING?

Dr. Robert J. Brueck MD, Fort Myers Plastic Surgeon, comments on the flood of patients going overseas for cosmetic surgery procedures.

If you asked this question, most everyone would say, " for sure". But some areas of the world may be doing better than others and one area may be Asia and South Korea in particular. What is the HOT new growth industry?

Medical tourism – booming.

Last year 82,000 patients visited South Korea and generated alone 700 million dollars in revenue. Three years earlier there were only 8,000 visitors. Next year they are expecting nearly 200,000 and get this - by 2020 they anticipate nearly one million medical tourists. Incredible! Plastic surgery procedures on average, cost about ½ as much. However there are considerable travel costs, hotels, meals, and should complications arise you just can’t just hop in your car and go to your local plastic surgeon down the block. It is not always an easy choice to say the least.

IT’S ALL IN THE NAME

Dr. Brueck MD, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Fort Myers, blogs about thing s major and minor. This message is on the minor side. Or is it? You be the judge.

~~~~~~~~~
Sometimes you can tell what something is all about by the name.
Now comes, "Le Goo!"
What is Le Goo? Maybe a new hair mousse? A new gummy bear type candy?
No – Le Goo is a gel that surgeons can use to stop bleeding without clamps or elastic loops.
What will come next? I’m sure there is a copyright on the name so we won’t see a new Le Goo candy.
Recipe for Disaster
This is another blog message from Dr. Robert J. Brueck, Fort Myers Cosmetic Surgeon, who posts messages on plastic surgery and related subjects.
It has always been my number one priority – patient safety.
I am always amazed what people can do to themselves. I once had a patient who was driving home in the wee hours of the morning after consuming more than a few beers. He crashed in a ditch and cut his forehead. He went home – still numb – and proceeded to suture his forehead with dental floss using one of the needles he uses to suture his hunting dogs.
Well, a lady in Homewood, IL died after injecting her face with HOT BEEF FAT.
Apparently she had done this before. She developed an infection in her face and mouth and presented to an emergency room.
Due to the unusual circumstances, an autopsy was performed. The final report said she died of peritonitis or an infection of her abdominal cavity. Regardless it is a tragic occurrence. One can only sit back and say why?
NEW INSURANCE BENEFIT - LIPOSUCTION
NEW INSURANCE BENEFIT - LIPOSUCTION
Now that’s a headline!
Imagine if insurance covered face lifts. It would be like standing in line at the deli counter and getting a number, except your wait would be months.
A paper was recently presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Denver and some doctors reported a decrease in triglyceride levels as well as white blood cell counts. The study included 322 women who had a tummy tuck and liposuction. Their triglyceride level decreased an average of 43%. So this may be a very pleasant side effect from liposuction.
PAINT BALL PLAYERS BEWARE
Another blog message from Fort Myers plastic surgeon, Dr. Robert Brueck MD FACS.
Life is always filled with risks.
Now we learn that breast implants and paint ball don’t mix. A woman playing paint ball in the United Kingdom was hit in the chest with a paint ball and her “implant exploded”.
If it was saline and it ruptured, it would deflate almost immediately, so the person would know it. However, a silicone rupture would be harder to detect because the “capsule” would contain the silicone in the ruptured implant.
Now, if you have implants and you want to go paintballing, you have to sign a special release
AND have extra padding.
Hope the air conditioning is working that day!
