NEW PLASTIC SURGERY SHOW

Dr. Robert J. Brueck is a Board Certified plastic surgeon practicing in Fort Myers and Cape Coral, FL. From time to time, he blogs here, on subjects profound and, well, not so profound. He also explains aspects of plastic surgery at his web site, Beauty-by-Brueck.com

It wasn’t long ago when reality TV was big into plastic surgery.

Hardly a day would go by when one of my patients wouldn't ask me if I saw the latest extreme makeover or Dr. 90210. I have to confess I never really got into them; one big reason is they come on after I was sound asleep. (My practice requires me to be awake and alert early in the morning.)

My oldest son, Jason, gave me a series of “Nip n Tuck” and I promise to pull them out of their case and watch them, when I get some time.

Now, for all of you out their longing for a new show, it has arrived.

Logo TV Network will be airing a new plastic surgery show starting May 2011 the title? I’m not so sure I like it, ”Pretty Hurts.”

Logo TV issued a press release that said the real pain in perpetual beauty with the new reality show. The show chronicles star Rand Rusher who is the self proclaimed “injector to the stars.” He, of course, is located in 90210, i.e. Beverly Hills, where he injects socialites, movie stars, drag queens…tune in to find out more. He also has business manager, Curt, Laser specialist, Joy, office manager, Elizabeth and aesthetician, Maya. Pop some popcorn, sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

The first show is Monday, May 9. Time? Don’t know-if it’s “early,” who knows? I may sneak a peek.

Cosmetic surgery trends changing - Dr. Brueck comments

In this blog message, Dr. Brueck comments on changes in the popularity of cosmetic surgery procedures for women. More comprehensive comments on plastic surgery in Fort Myers can be found at Dr. Brueck's web site, Beauty-by-Brueck.com

WHAT’S NEW FOR WOMEN

Last year saw some rather dramatic reversals in cosmetic surgery trends for women. Last year, the number 1 (numero uno) procedure for women was Breast Augmentation; just under 300,000 breast augs were performed in 2010. This represents a jump of 39% from the year 2000. I feel a big reason for this rise is due to the fact silicone is back on the market. These implants in my opinion are certainly better than saline. Along with augmentation, mastopexy or breast lifts saw a healthy rise of 70% since 2000.

Some of the previously popular cosmetic surgery procedures saw a dramatic fall.

Liposuction was down 43% (203,106), nose reshaping or rhinoplasty down 35% (252,261), eyelid surgery down 36% (208,764) and facelifts down 16% (112,955).

I feel some of the more traditional cosmetic surgery procedures for women such as eyelid surgery and facelifts are down because non-surgical procedures such as Botox and injectable fillers are being substituted.

But, I always tell my patients, “if you have loose skin, fillers won’t do.”

More men choosing plastic surgery - Dr. Brueck comments.

Once again, Fort Myers Board Certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Robert Brueck, reports on the state plastic surgery. You can read more from Dr. Brueck at his web site., Beauty-by-Brueck.com

THE RACE IS TIGHTENING

Men are mounting a great race. For so long, cosmetic surgery was primarily something women would inquire about and ultimately do, but men are staging a valiant challenge.

Recently released figures by the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPA) shows that more and more men are choosing the knife. Overall, cosmetic plastic procedures were up 2% in 2010 over 2009 BUT certain procedures really jumped. Facelifts were up 14% in 2010 over 2009 and Liposuction was up 7%. There was a 6% increase in gynecomastia resection (male breast tissue). I can’t help but wonder if their search for the fountain of youth is to help put their best foot forward in the job market.

I had liposuction to my “love” handles 25 years ago because they never went away. So frustration probably is also a big part. Obviously demand for cosmetic procedures is also distracted by the economy. In 2010 the top 5 male cosmetic procedures in terms of shear numbers were:

1. Rhinoplasty -64,000

2. Eyelid Surgery-31,000

3. Liposuction- 24,000

4. Breast reduction (gynecomastia)-18,000

5. Hair transplantation-13,000

When there is something about the way you look that you are not happy with, it can affect your self-confidence and well-being. There is nothing wrong with fixing it.
