Who’s Your Favorite Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon?

If you said Dr. Brueck, you would be in good company.

A survey conducted by Castle Connelly Medical Ltd. of New York on behalf of Gulfshore Life Magazine provided a list of top doctors in Charlotte, Lee and Collier Counties in 2008. Dr. Brueck is listed as one of the top four plastic surgeons in the three-county area and the only plastic surgeon listed for Lee County.

According to Castle Connelly Medical Ltd., "… listings were selected after peer nomination, extensive research and careful review and screening by our doctor-directed research team.”

The survey is based on several criteria including, “…professional qualifications: education, residency, board certification, fellowships; professional reputation, hospital appointment, medical school faculty appointment, experience and disciplinary history.”

Dr. Brueck has been on the list of area Top Doctors for six successive years. He practices with Associates in Plastic Surgery at 3700 Central Avenue in Fort Myers, FL, with a satellite facility in Cape Coral, FL. He is associated with the Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center, a member hospital of Lee Memorial Health System.

Dr. Brueck commented, “I am very pleased to be among the Southwest Florida doctors recognized on the 2008 America’s Top Doctors list. It is especially gratifying when one considers the process and criteria used to arrive at the list.”

A complete summary of Dr. Brueck’s qualifications can be found at his web site, which also includes extensive discussion of the procedures in which in specializes.

More on non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

The statistics for cosmetic surgery procedures showed dermal fillers to be one of the most popular.

It seems that every week, a new dermal filler comes on the market.

Now we are beginning to see some studies comparing one filler to another. A recent study was done by Dr. Jessica Wu at the Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles.

The study involved 30 women. These 30 women had been treated previously for nasolobial folds with Restylane. These women were subsequently treated with Juvaderm Ultra for the same nasolobial folds. The volume of Juvaderm injected was the same as the previously injected Restylane.

The patients reported a better overall improvement with the Juvaderm Ultra (97%) and 83% said it lasted longer. For their next treatment – 93.1% said they would prefer Juvaderm.

So be it! You be the judge.

Cosmetic Surgery Grows in Popularity

So, what’s hot in cosmetic surgery now?

A pleasant surprise is the resurgence in the number of people wanting face lifts. The number of face lifts done in 2007 was 14% more than the number performed in 2006. This may reflect the fact that fillers and botulinum (or botox) can only do so much to rejuvenate one’s face. If there is redundant skin then only a face lift will provide a solution.

Breast augmentation numbers showed and increase of 6% more than the number done in 2006.

Breast reductions increased 2%, while gynecomastion (male breast surgery) operations increased 7%.

Overall there were 12 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2007 a 7% increase over 2006.

The following were the top five surgical procedures:

1. Breast augmentation (348,000 - up 6%)

2. Liposuction (302,000 - unchanged)

3. Rhinoplasty (285,000 - down 7%)

4. Blephoroplasty eyelids (241,000 - up 3%)

5. Abdominoplasty (148,000 - up 1%)

Non-invasive, non-surgical procedures continue their high demand. There were nearly 10 million minimally invasive procedures performed.

1. Botox (4.6 million - up 13%)

2. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers (1.1 million - up 35%)

3. Chemical Peels (1 million - down 4%)

4. Laser Hair Removal (906,000 - up 2%)

5. Microdermabrasion (897,000 - up 10%)

There you have it! The battle to turn back the hands of time continues.

Dr. Brueck Busts Some Beauty Myths

#1 Shampoo hair daily for healthy hair.

Shampooing hair daily can open up the hair follicles and cause the loss of essential oils. The oil needs to go from cuticle/follicle to the end of the hair. If you want to “wash” your hair daily, consider a simple warm water rinse. Look for a shampoo that contains essential ingredients for healthy hair follicles, such as lemongrass oils, ginkgo biloba, soy protein and Vitamin A, E and B. Good Choice: Giovanni Smooth as Silk Shampoo (giovannicosmetics.com)

#2 Pop a pimple to get it to go away.

NO! Popping a pimple can lead to greater inflammation and actually enlarge the pore. Oh, those ugly large pores! Minimize touching your face – this can spread bacteria. Environmental pollutants such as cigarette smoke are a no-no! Get a skincare system that is for example salicyclic acid; the ingredients should be noncomedogenic.

#3 Concealer is the best solution for dark under the eye circles.

The skin under the eyes is very thin and the protruding fat can lead to “bags”. Good sleep, nutrition and hydration go a long way to minimize circles. Choose a concealer close to your normal skin tone. Use a soft hand when you apply it. Mineral based makeup is the best. The newest ingredients include Vitamins K and A. Pick: Jane Iredale Circle/Delete Concealer
